UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering

Updating recruitment communications.

I consulted on strategic communications for a year and led a three-phase strategy to strengthen messaging and reach prospective students more effectively.

The challenge.

The Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department at UCL (UCL CEGE) was looking to improve their external communications and they hired me for a year to help them identify and implement necessary changes. I led a three-phase communications strategy consisting of the following:

  1. I conducted an audit of the department’s current communications and developed a new strategy for student recruitment, to help the team streamline communications internally and deliver messaging more quickly.

  2. I conducted a website audit and came up with recommendations for improvement.

  3. I oversaw a website update for the new academic year.

The impact.

After a year of me working closely with the team, they were prepared to take over communications themselves. Because I had developed a more consistent and efficient strategy for communications, and with new processes in place, it was easier for them to reach prospective students. The new website also allowed the department to highlight its unique strengths, which also meant that their recruitment strategy was more successful.
